determinability

/dɪtˌɜmɪnəbˈɪlᵻɾi/ noun

The quality of being determinable.

Word Origin From Latin de- 'completely' and terminus 'boundary, end' — so to determine is literally to set a final boundary, to completely end the discussion. Determinability is the quality of being able to be pinned down like that. The root terminus also gives us terminal, terminate, and exterminate (to put beyond the boundary, i.e., kill). The PIE root *terh₂- 'to cross over' is the same one in trans- and through.
