Word Origin From Latin contingere 'to touch together, happen' — literally 'the state of touching together.' The root tangere gives us contact, tangible, tangent, and attain. The PIE root *tag- 'to touch' also appears in tax (originally a touch of assessment) and perhaps in taste. So contingence is a great example of how 'touching' became a metaphor for chance events that 'touch' us.
