ambiguousness

/æmˈbɪɡjuəsnəs/ noun

The state or quality of being ambiguous; ambiguity

Word Origin From Latin ambi- 'around, both' and agere 'to drive' — literally 'driving in both directions,' which is a great image for something that can be interpreted multiple ways. The word ambiguous came into English via French, and the -ness suffix makes it a noun. The same agere root gives us act, agent, and exact (driven out). Ambi- also appears in ambivalent (both values) and ambidextrous.
