agley

/əˈɡleɪ/ adj C1

wrong; not right

Word Origin A Scots word combining the Old English intensive prefix ā- 'away, off' and gley 'to squint, look askance' — so agley means 'awry, off-target,' as if your aim has squinted away. It's famously used by Robert Burns: 'The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley.' The word gley itself is related to squinting, giving a vivid image of things going sideways.
