unobligated

/ʌnˈɑblᵻɡˌeɪɾᵻd/ adj

Not obligated.

Word Origin Unobligated is un- 'not' plus obligated, which comes from Latin obligare — ob- 'to' and ligare 'to bind.' So to be obligated is to be bound to something, and unobligated means free of that tie. The root ligare gives us ligament (something that binds), religion (originally 'to bind back' to the divine), and rely (to bind oneself to).
