Word Origin Unawake is simply un- 'not' plus awake — not awake. Awake comes from Old English wacan 'to arise, wake up,' which also gives us awaken and wakeful. It's a straightforward negation, but the root wacan is part of a family that includes watch (originally 'to be awake') and even vigil.
