Word Origin Copy comes from Latin copia 'abundance, supply,' which originally meant 'plenty' — from co- 'together' and ops 'wealth.' The idea shifted from 'abundance' to 'a transcript' because making copies multiplies the supply. Recopy is to copy again. Copia also gives us opulence (wealth) and copious (abundant). So a copy is literally an abundance of the original.
