nutmeat

/nˈʌtmit/ noun B1

the edible part inside a nut's shell

Word Origin A compound of 'nut' and 'meat' — but 'meat' originally meant any solid food, from Proto-Germanic 'matiz'. So nutmeat is literally the food part of a nut. The same 'meat' root gives us sweetmeat (candied food) and mincemeat (chopped food), and even 'mate' (companion, originally one you share food with).
