Word Origin The mis- prefix (badly) plus govern, which comes from Greek kybernan 'to steer, pilot' — so misgovern is literally 'to steer badly.' The same Greek root gives us cybernetics (the science of control) and gubernatorial (relating to a governor). The idea of governing as steering a ship is ancient.
