inoperable

/ˌɪˈnɑpɝəbəɫ/ adj

**Inoperable** describes something that cannot be made to work or that cannot be operated on surgically. A broken toaster that refuses to heat up is inoperable. Doctors reserve the word for ailments that no scalpel can fix. The term works equally well for a laptop whose motherboard has given up the ghost and for a tumor that refuses to respond to removal. In either case the label signals that repair or excision lies beyond current capability, and the object remains idle.

Word Origin From in- 'not' + operable, which comes from Latin operari 'to work.' So inoperable means 'not workable' — a tumor that can't be operated on, a machine that can't be fixed. The root oper- gives us operate, operation, and even opera (a work of music). The PIE root *h3ep- meant 'to work, produce,' which also appears in opus (a work) and cooperate (work together). The breakdown in+oper+able makes it clear: not able to be worked on.
