hilariousness

/hɪˈɫɛɹiəsnəs/ noun

The characteristic of being hilarious; hilarity.

Word Origin Hilariousness comes from Latin hilaris 'cheerful, merry,' from Greek hilaros, from PIE *selh₂- 'to reconcile, make whole.' The same root gives us solace (comfort), solid (whole), and consolidate (make solid together). So hilariousness is the quality of being so cheerful it makes you feel whole. The word hilarious entered English in the 1800s, and we added -ness to make it a noun.
