functionless

/ˈfəŋkʃənləs/ adj

lacking a function

Word Origin 'Function' from Latin 'fungi' meaning 'to perform, execute.' The suffix '-less' means 'without.' So functionless is 'without function,' literally 'use-less' (but not to be confused with 'useless'). The same root 'fungi' gives us 'defunct' (no longer performing, dead) and 'perfunctory' (performed superficially). The PIE *bheug- root also gave us 'enjoy' (to have use of) — so function is about use.
