dentition

/dɛnˈtɪʃən/ noun B2

**Dentition** is the collective term for all the teeth an animal or person has. It describes the type, number and arrangement of those teeth, whether they’re sharp, flat or somewhere in between. In humans the word often splits into primary dentition, the baby set, and permanent dentition, the adult set that replaces it. Mammals display a wide range of dental formulas, a shorthand that tells you how many incisors, canines, premolars and molars sit on each side of each jaw. Veterinarians and paleontologists use dentition to infer diet and evolutionary relationships. The term works equally well for sharks, whose rows of replaceable teeth create a constantly shifting dentition.

Word Origin Dentition is all about teeth—from Latin 'dens', tooth. The breakdown dent+ition shows the tooth root with a noun suffix meaning the process or condition of teeth, like the arrangement and development of teeth. It's in the same family as dentist, denture, and even trident (three teeth). The PIE root *h3dent- gives us 'odont' in orthodontist.
