chillness

/t͡ʃɪlnəs/ noun

the state of being chilly

Word Origin Chillness is the state of being chill, from Old English ciele 'cold.' The word chill has been with us since Anglo-Saxon times, and the -ness suffix (Old English -nes) turns it into a noun. The same root gives us chilly and chilliness. The PIE root *gel- 'cold' also appears in gelid, glacier, and even jelly (from the cold setting).
