capitol

/ˈkæpɪtəɫ/ noun B1

a statehouse

Word Origin From Latin caput 'head' — the Capitol was originally the temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, the head of the city. The same root gives us capital (head city), captain (head of a group), and decapitate (remove the head). The PIE root *kaput- meant 'head,' and you can see it in chapter (a little head, a section) and cattle (property, originally 'head of cattle').
