anathematize

/əˈnæ.θə.mə.taɪz/ verb C1

to formally curse or strongly condemn someone or something

Word Origin From Greek anathema, originally 'something set up (as an offering)', then 'something devoted to evil, a curse'. It's built from ana- 'up' and tithenai 'to put' — literally 'put up'. The PIE root *dheh- 'to set, put' is one of the most prolific: it gives us do, deed, doom, donate, fact, and thesis. So anathematize is 'to put up a curse', and it shares its root with the simplest English verb, do.
