Word Origin From Old English 'gecynde' meaning 'natural, innate' — originally, 'kind' meant natural, inborn. The sense of 'benevolent' developed because it was natural to be good to one's kin. 'Unkind' adds un- (not), so not natural, not benevolent. Then -ly makes it an adverb: in an unkind manner. The same root gives us kindred (family), mankind, and kind (type). The PIE root *ǵenh₁- 'to give birth' also gives us gene, generate, and gentle. So unkindly means acting against your natural goodness.
