Word Origin From Latin 'callum' meaning hard skin. To act callously is to act with emotional hardness, like having a thick skin. The root gives us 'callous' (hardened, unfeeling) and 'callousness'. The PIE root *kal- also gives us 'callus' (hardened skin).
