stunned

/ˈstənd/ adj

Unable to act or respond; dazed; shocked.

Word Origin Stunned originally meant 'struck, beaten' — from Old English stunian 'to pound.' Over time, it shifted to the mental sense of being knocked senseless by a blow or shock. The same root gives us stunning (strikingly beautiful, as if hitting you with awe) and astound (to strike with wonder). The PIE root *stau- 'to strike' also appears in stunt (to hinder growth, originally to strike) and stutter (to strike the tongue).
