peruke

/pəˈɹuːk/ noun C1

a wig

Word Origin Peruke is a fancy word for a wig, borrowed from French perruque, which came from Italian perrucca. But the ultimate root is Latin pellis 'skin, hide' — because early wigs were made of animal skins? The PIE root *pel- 'skin' also gives us pelt and pellicle. So a peruke is literally a 'skin thing'. The word wig itself is a shortening of periwig, which is a corruption of peruke.
