outmatch

/ˌaʊtˈmætʃ/ verb

to surpass or be better than something or someone else

Word Origin A compound of Old English ūt 'out' and mæcca 'mate, equal' — so to outmatch is to be more than a match for someone, to surpass them. The same mæcca root gives us match (as in a contest) and mate (a companion). The out- prefix is a great example of how English creates verbs of exceeding: outdo, outlive, outwit, outshine.
