fluted

/flˈuɾᵻd/ adj

Having flutes or grooves, either for decoration or to trim weight.

Word Origin Flute comes from Old French flaute, probably from Latin flare 'to blow' — so a flute is a blown instrument. Fluted means having grooves like a flute's column. The same Latin root flare gives us inflate (blow into), deflate (blow out), and flatulent (windy). The PIE *bhel- 'to blow, swell' also gives us blow and bladder. So fluted columns mimic the vertical channels of a flute.
