[ aˈmit͡ʃe ] noun C1**Amice** is a narrow strip of linen or silk that drapes over the shoulders and hangs down the front of a cleric’s robe, originally a protection against the cold and later a modesty veil in Christian liturgy. It sits just above the cassock, framing the priest’s chest with a quiet, historical flourish. In the Middle Ages the amice was a loose, sleeveless tunic worn over armor or everyday clothes, tied at the neck and belted. The liturgical version is folded, pinned, and the priest can see the cross on his chest while it keeps the collar clean. When the priest lifts his arms for the Eucharist, the amice is tucked away, exposing the vestments beneath. Some modern churches omit it, but when used it adds a dash of historic solemnity.
