winterish

/ˈwɪntɝɪʃ/ adj

Characteristic of winter.

Word Origin Winter comes from Proto-Germanic wintruz, from PIE *gheim- 'winter, snow.' The suffix -ish, from Proto-Germanic iskaz, means 'having the quality of' — so winterish means 'like winter, wintry.' The same root gives us wintry, wintery, winterize, and hibernate (from Latin hibernus 'wintry'). The PIE root *gheim- also gives us Latin hiems 'winter' and Greek cheima 'winter weather.'
