unstylish

/ʌnstˈaɪlɪʃ/ adj

Not stylish; unfashionable.

Word Origin 'Style' comes from Latin 'stilus', the pointed stick used for writing on wax tablets. Over time, it came to mean one's manner of writing, then manner in general. 'Stylish' means having style, and 'unstylish' is the opposite. The root *steig- also gives us 'stick', 'sting', and 'instigate' (to goad). So unstylish is literally 'not having the point' — lacking that sharp, distinctive manner.
