unpaired

/ʌnpˈɛɹd/ adj

not forming one of a pair

Word Origin From Latin par 'equal, matching' — a pair is two things that are equal. Unpaired means not matched, lacking its equal. The same root gives us compare (bring together as equals), parity (equality), and nonpareil (without equal, unmatched). The prefix un- does the negating, and -ed makes it an adjective.
