semipublic

/sˌɛmɪpˈʌblɪk/ adj

Somewhat, but not entirely, public.

Word Origin Semi- from Latin 'half' and publicus from populus 'people' — so semipublic is literally 'half of the people,' meaning partly open to the public. Publicus itself comes from populus, which also gives us popular, population, and people. The semi- prefix appears in semicircle, semicolon, semiconductor — always that sense of 'half.' So a semipublic space is one that's not fully private, not fully public, but somewhere in between.
