Word Origin From Latin secare 'to cut' — segmental means relating to segments, the pieces something is cut into. Segment itself comes from segmentum 'a piece cut off,' and -al makes it an adjective. The same root secare gives us bisect, dissect, intersect, and insect (literally 'cut into' because of the segmented body).
