/ˈnutɹiənt/ adj B1, B2A **nutrient** is a substance an organism needs to grow, survive, and function. Plants sip it from soil, animals gulp it from food, and cells absorb it to power their chemistry. Nutrients fall into macronutrients—proteins, fats, carbohydrates that provide bulk energy—and micronutrients—vitamins and minerals that act as catalysts and regulators. Only chemicals the body cannot make in sufficient amounts are called essential. In casual speech people often mean vitamins and minerals, while scientists keep the definition broader.
