motiveless

/ˈmoʊtɪvləs/ adj

**Motiveless** describes an act, decision, or feeling that proceeds without any discernible motive. It conveys a sense of puzzling purposelessness. When a crime is called motiveless, investigators have found no personal gain, revenge, or ideology driving the perpetrator. The term also fits harmless jokes that arise for no reason other than the sheer joy of surprise. Writers favor it to highlight the irrational side of human behavior, while speakers may use it to emphasize bafflement. Though similar to aimless, motiveless specifically denies the presence of any underlying intention.

(registro: formal / literario)

Word Origin A combination of motive (from Latin movere 'to move') and -less (from Proto-Germanic *lausaz 'devoid of'). So motiveless means without a motive, lacking a reason to act. The movere root gives us move, motion, emotion (a moving out of feeling), and promote (move forward). The -less suffix is the same as in careless, hopeless. So motiveless is literally 'move-less,' no inner drive.
