heatwave

/ˈhitˌweɪv/ noun

A heat haze.

Word Origin Heatwave is a compound of two Old English words: hǣtu 'heat' and wæg 'wave' — a wave of heat. The word heat is related to hot, and both come from PIE *kai- 'heat.' Wave comes from PIE *wegh- 'to move, carry,' which also gives us weigh, wagon, and vehicle. So a heatwave is literally a moving surge of heat, like a wave in the ocean.
