harvestman

/hˈɑɹvɪstmən/ noun

An order of terrestrial, non-venomous arachnids with often very long legs: Opiliones; any individual of this order.

Word Origin Harvestman combines 'harvest' from Proto-Germanic 'harbitaz' 'autumn, harvest' and 'man.' The PIE root *kerp- 'to pluck, gather' gives us 'harvest' and also 'carp' (to pluck) and 'excerpt' (to pick out). So a harvestman is literally a 'plucking man,' one who gathers the crop. The word 'harvest' itself was once the name for the autumn season.
