fertilizable

/fˈɜɾəlˌaɪzəbəl/ adj

Capable of being fertilized.

Word Origin From Latin fertilis, from ferre 'to bear, carry' — the idea of bearing fruit. Fertile means productive. The suffix -ize makes it a verb: to fertilize is to make fertile. Add -able, and fertilizable means 'able to be made fertile.' The root ferre is everywhere: transfer (carry across), refer (carry back), offer (carry to), suffer (carry under). So fertilizable is literally 'able to be made to bear.'
