The tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own traditional, deferred, or adoptive ethnic culture.

Word Origin Ethnocentrism combines Greek ethnos 'people, nation' and kentron 'center' — literally 'putting one's own people at the center.' The -ism makes it a belief system. Kentron originally meant a sharp point, like the stationary point of a compass, so the idea is that your own culture is the fixed point around which everything else revolves. The same root gives us eccentric (off-center) and concentrate (bring to a center). Ethnocentrism is a vivid word: you can almost see the compass needle stuck on one's own group.
