companionless

/kəmˈpænjənləs/ adj

Without a companion; friendless, alone.

Word Origin Companion comes from Latin companio, literally 'bread-sharer' (com- 'with' + panis 'bread'). A companion is someone you share bread with. Companionless adds -less to mean without a companion, so you're eating alone. The same panis root gives us pantry (bread storage) and accompany (to be a bread-sharer with).
