chieftainship

/ˈtʃiftənʃɪp/ noun

The state of being a chieftain

Word Origin 'Chief' comes from Latin 'caput' meaning 'head' — the leader is the head of the group. 'Chieftain' adds the Old French suffix -tain (from Latin -anus), so it's the head man. Then -ship (state or condition) makes it the position of being a chieftain. The same 'caput' root gives us captain, capital, and decapitate (to remove the head). So chieftainship is literally 'head-ship'.
