cayuse

/ˈkaɪuːs/ noun B2

a horse native to the western range

Word Origin Cayuse is a surprising word: it comes from French 'cailloux' 'stones, pebbles,' via the name of a Native American tribe in Oregon, the Cayuse, whose name may have been given by French trappers. The root 'calx' 'stone' also gives us chalk, calculate (from pebble-counting), and calcium. So a horse breed is linked to pebbles!
