boatmanship

/ˈboʊtmənʃɪp/ noun

The art of managing or looking after a boat.

Word Origin A compound of boat (from Proto-Germanic *baitaz, originally 'a split log' — a dugout canoe) and man, with the suffix -ship meaning 'state, skill.' So boatmanship is the art of handling a boat. The -ship suffix (from *skapiz 'creation, condition') also appears in seamanship, horsemanship, and craftsmanship. The PIE root *bheid- 'to split' gives us boat (split wood) and also bite (split with teeth).
