avant

/əˈvɑnt/ noun

The front of an army; the vanguard.

Word Origin Avant is the French descendant of Latin abante, a blend of ab 'from' and ante 'before' — literally 'from before.' It's the same word that gives us avant-garde (the advance guard, those ahead of their time). The root ante also appears in anterior, antecedent, and antique (something from before). So avant is all about being ahead.
