annihilative

/ænˈaɪələtˌɪv/ adj

Serving to annihilate; radically destructive.

Word Origin From Latin ad- 'to' and nihil 'nothing' — literally 'to bring to nothing.' Annihilative describes the power to utterly destroy. Nihil itself is a compound of ne- 'not' and hilum 'a trifle, a whit,' so 'not even a little bit.' The same root gives us nihilism (belief in nothing), nihilist, and annihilate. The ad- prefix assimilated to an- before n, a common pattern.
