alternator

/ˈɔɫtɝˌneɪtɝ/ noun B2

**Alternator** is a rotary generator that turns mechanical spin into alternating electric current, most famously the heart of a car’s charging system. When the engine whirs, the alternator spins, producing the juice that keeps the battery happy and powers lights, radios, and everything else that refuses to work without electricity. Beyond its basic job, the alternator houses a rotating magnet (the rotor) and a stationary coil (the stator) that together generate a wave of current flipping direction fifty or sixty times a second, depending on the region. A voltage regulator smooths the output so the car’s electronics stay calm. In older cars a belt ties the alternator to the engine, a neat illustration of mechanical sympathy.

Word Origin Alternator comes from Latin alternare 'to interchange,' from alter 'the other (of two).' The -or suffix makes it an agent: a device that produces alternating current. The root alter gives us alter, alteration, and altruism (concern for others). The idea of 'other' is central.
