Word Origin Adept comes from Latin adeptus 'having attained,' from ad- 'to' and apisci 'to reach, grasp.' An adept person has grasped the skill. Adeptly means doing something with that attained skill. The same root gives us apt (fitting, suitable) and adapt (to fit to something), while inept is the opposite — not grasped, not fitting.
