unrecognized

/ənˈɹɛkəɡˌnaɪzd/ adjective

not noticed, identified, or given credit for something

Word Origin Recognize comes from Latin re- 'again' + cognoscere 'to know' (from noscere). So recognize is 'to know again.' Unrecognized is not known again. The root noscere gives us cognition, incognito (not known), ignore (not knowing), and note (something known). The PIE root *gno- is the same as in know.
