throughput

/ˈθɹuˌpʊt/ noun

**Throughput** is the rate at which something gets through a system, be it data on a network, widgets on an assembly line, or customers at a checkout. It tells you how much gets done in a given slice of time, usually expressed in bits per second, items per hour, or similar units. In computing, high throughput means a server can juggle many requests quickly, yet it doesn’t guarantee low latency; the two are cousins, not twins. Manufacturing engineers watch throughput to decide whether a machine is a bottleneck or a speed demon, tweaking workflows as needed. Because throughput hinges on both capacity and demand, even a wide pipe can crawl if the upstream source dribbles.

Word Origin A compound of 'through' and 'put,' where 'put' comes from an old sense of 'to push, thrust.' Throughput is the amount of material or data that passes through a system. The same 'put' root gives us 'input' (push in) and 'output' (push out). So throughput is literally 'pushed through.'
