scabbiness

/skˈæbɪnəs/ noun

The property of being scabby, of having or being covered with scabs.

Word Origin From Proto-Germanic *skab- 'scab, itch', ultimately from PIE *skab- 'to scratch, scrape' — so scabbiness is literally the state of being covered in scabs, those crusty reminders of scratching. The same root gives us scabies (the itchy skin condition) and, surprisingly, shave — because scraping a razor across skin is the same idea. The -y and -ness suffixes just build the adjective and noun, turning a scratch into a quality.
