industrialize

/ˌɪnˈdəstɹiəˌɫaɪz/ verb B1

to bring factories and industry to a place

Word Origin Industrialize means to develop industry, but the root is Latin industria 'diligence, activity', from indu- 'in' and struere 'to build, pile up'. The idea: industry is about building things up from within. The same struere root gives us construct (build together), destroy (un-build), and structure (something built). The breakdown industri+al+ize shows the root, the adjective suffix -al, and the verb suffix -ize. So industrialize is literally 'to make industrial'.
