feudality

The state or quality of being feudal; feudal form or constitution.

Word Origin Feudality comes from feud, from Medieval Latin feudum 'fief, estate held from a superior,' which goes back to Proto-Germanic *fehu 'cattle, property, wealth.' So feudalism is literally a system based on property. The same root *peku- gives us fee (payment) and fief. Cattle were wealth!
