Word Origin The core is Latin gratus 'pleasing' — agree originally meant 'to be pleasing to'. Add dis- 'not' and you get disagree: not pleasing. Disagreeably then is doing something in a not-pleasing manner. The same root gratus gives us grateful, gratitude, and even grace (via gratia). So when you act disagreeably, you're literally being ungraceful. The breakdown dis+agree+able+ly makes it clear: not + pleasing + able + in a manner.
