diarrhea

/ˌdaɪɝˈiə/ noun B1

a condition in which a person has loose, watery bowel movements

Word Origin From Greek dia- 'through' and rhein 'to flow' — literally 'flowing through.' The same rhein root gives us rheum (a watery discharge), rheumatism (originally thought to be caused by flowing humors), and rhythm (a measured flow). The dia- prefix appears in dialogue (speech across) and diameter (measure across). So diarrhea is a vivid, if unpleasant, word for something that flows right through.
