cheque

/ˈtʃɛk/ noun A2, C1

a written order directing a bank to pay money

Word Origin Cheque (or check) has a royal origin: it comes from Persian shah 'king', the same word that gives us chess and checkmate. In chess, when the king is threatened, you say 'check'; later, a written order to a bank was called a check because it 'checked' against forgery. So a cheque is literally a 'king' of financial documents.
